Mayorial Candidate Ward Luthi Answers Art related questions

1.  Do you have a favorite Artist or Art Event in Fort Collins?
The Friday night Gallery Walk is my favorite art event in Fort Collins.

2.  How do you envision the future of the the Fort Collins Arts Community?
I would like to see the FC Arts Community expand.  I run hiking trips around the world, and I love the natural arts environment found in many European cities.  Rather than art being relegated to specific places or times, the art culture seems to pervade their cities.  I would like to see more of that here in Fort Collins, not only in art events but in how we build and lay out our city.

3. Are you aware that Fort Collins does not have an Arts Council?  Do you think we need one?
I was not aware.  I think an Arts Council would be a positive move for Fort Collins.

4.  How do you personally support the Arts in Fort Collins?
To me, art is part of everything we do.  As a candidate for mayor who has a background in urban planning as well as wilderness education, I have worked since the late 1980's to make Fort Collins, our built environment, as beautiful as any natural area or art gallery.

My best,

Ward Luthi

Wade Troxell, Candidate for Mayor Responds!

1. Do you have a favorite Artist or Art Event in Fort Collins?
Ellie Troxell (artist), Ellie Weakley (artist), FOCO Masks (event), New West Fest
(event)
2. How do you envision the future of the Fort Collins Arts Community?
We need to feature “creative innovation” as an economic cluster for Fort Collins;
the arts community is at the core of it. I support pursuit of a Creative District and
Innovation District designations for Fort Collins.
3. Are you aware that Fort Collins does not have an Arts Council? Do you think we
need one?
I need more information. We have a number of arts and cultural boards of
various kinds. The Cultural Resources Board is a broad citizens representation
for the City of Fort Collins. I would like more information or proposal for an Arts
Council.
4. How do you personally support the Arts in Fort Collins?
I support the arts community in Fort Collins and at CSU in various ways including
leader, sponsor, attendee, participant, contributor and cheerleader. Most
recently, I am the Council liaison to the Cultural Resources Board, financially
supported Streetmosphere, was a technical contributor to the Arts Incubator of the
Rockies, was a guest speaker to the Interior Design, Apparel Design and
Merchandising, Textile Design, and Graphic Design students at their Industry
Connections Day, am a team member of the CSU Creative Innovation Team that
features “design thinking”, and attended a recent performance of the Fort Collins
Symphony.

How will Old Town look this Summer without Streetmosphere?

Scary thought, isn't it?  Well, unless a whole lot of people buy sponsorships soon, you might as well get used to the pot smoking groups on the corner.  Streetmosphere is in trouble and if you own a business or know someone who owns a business in Old Town Fort Collins, encourage them to sponsor Steetmosphere by buying an ad in the booklet or being an Artists sponsor.  You can find more information about saving Streetmosphere here.

Or, better yet, donate now.

Work with Cory Gilstrap at MOA

Museum of Outdoor Arts (MOA) is recruiting undergraduate and high school senior level interns for its Design and Build Summer Art Program. Interns will work in a professional studio environment with artist in residence, Cory Gilstrap to create works for an exhibition at MOA's indoor gallery. Participants will be awarded a $1,500 stipend and college credit may also be available.

Ideal candidates for the program should have a good understanding of or be enrolled in programs such as painting, drawing, sculpture, wood working, carpentry, industrial design, exhibition design and installation, engineering, electronic engineering, digital media production, graphic design, video etc.

Interested candidates should view http://www.moaonline.org/design-and-build for detailed information about the program and application instructions. The application deadline is April 10, 2015 and the program dates are June 15- August 10, M - F 9:30am-5pm.

Since 1991, MOA's Design and Build program has provided an opportunity for young artists, students and creative minds to express their creativity in collaborative public art and gallery exhibition projects. Assisted by professional artists in residence, Design and Build participants produce exciting and original site-specific art works for public spaces in the Denver metro area and MOA's indoor galleries. Interns find creative solutions to practical challenges as they master the skills to transform their creative ideas into finished pieces.

The program generates temporary public art/exhibitions and offers lessons in collaborative teamwork, problem-solving and aesthetic and technical considerations. From concept to installation, students must consider all elements of the public art process, including environmental concern, safety, budgeting, project design, proposal writing, maquette making, construction, installation and removal. When installed, Design and Build artworks enliven the everyday life of the community.

Colorado Musicians Featured in New KUNC Saturday Lineup

The Colorado Sound got it’s start on KRFC (Fort Collins) in 2006.  In 2010 it went independent.  Today, it is the most widely distributed and heard independent music program in the state.  I heard it today on KUNC.  It was wonderful to hear a show focused local music on the local NPR station.

District 2 Candidate Nancy Tellez Writes her response

Below are my responses to your questions.
1.  Do you have a favorite Artist or Art Event in Fort Collins?
What I love is the variety of arts-related opportunities in Ft Collins.
The First Friday walks to the local galleries, the variety of stage
performances and concerts, and the museum provide us with a rich cultural
experience.

2.  How do you envision the future of the the Fort Collins Arts Community?
I support the growth of the arts community in Ft. Collins.  For the
specific direction of that growth, I would look to the arts community
itself and those in the broader Ft. Collins community who support the arts.

3. Are you aware that Fort Collins does not have an Arts Council?  Do you
think we need one?
What should determine that is not whether I think we need an Arts Council,
but whether the arts community and the community-at-large believes there
would be a value in the formation of such a council, what its
responsibilities, membership, etc., should be.

4.  How do you personally support the Arts in Fort Collins?
I am a season-ticket holder at the Lincoln Center and the Midtown Arts
Center. I attend performances regularly at Bas Bleu Theater, Open Stage,
and the performing arts center at the former Fort Collins High School
addition, and I frequently participate in First Friday walks.  I also
attend arts events at our local schools.

Thank you for engaging with the candidates on this important subject.
Nancy

District 6 Candidate Carl Wangsvick Answers questions about the Arts

Our favorite artist is my son Erik, a CSU Grad with a triple major in painting, sculpture, and art history, who is also a musician.  He has exhibited artwork in town, primarily, is involved in Masks and “utilitybox”art, and shown, of course, in our home.  Erik has also held First Friday shows for fellow artists exhibiting along with public school groups he has worked with.  His “Books” show held at downtown Mugs included junior high artists, CSU artists, and local professionals, all in one show. Very inclusive.  Showed the kids see they were real artists too.  It also featured one of his many bands, which perform locally, in the next FOCO MX, and nationally.

A favorite local artist of note is Bob Coonts.  His wife Sally is an old friend. As fellow literature teachers, Anne and I love the theater experience most, attending plays regularly in every venue, from public schools to our local venues, to Denver’s Boetcher. Locally, we often see current and former students who are involved, either onstage or backstage. Quite a thrill.

2.  How do you envision the future of the the Fort Collins Arts Community?

Given the right support, the community will grow steadily and have even more of an impact than it has now, which is significant today even at the national level. We will not be resting on our laurels, certainly.

3.  Are you aware that Fort Collins does not have an Arts Council?  Do you think we need one?

Certainly, we need an Arts Council, to encourage that growth and advise civic leaders about opportunities not to be missed.

4. How do you personally support the Arts in Fort Collins?

A pretty long answer, and I hope it is not considered overly proud.

First, we support my son’s art and music careers, as we have for a decade. I bought his irst drum set after seeing it on sale at the music store, next to Discount tires when getting tires. I cancelled the tires, went and got Erik, and got the drums. Best decision ever.

Next, we purchased our home on Westview, designed by Hunter and Price and built for Price, while they were building the CSU campus in the 50’s. Because they knew how much we cared, the Prices sold it to us for 20 thousand less than the bid from an investor who wanted to rent it to students. We restored, and landmarked our home, at the request of the city, after being informed that a city study of 4,000 midcentury buildings found six worth city, state, and nationallandmarking, ours the only residence among those. We cancelled plans for a library addition (two English teachers have a lot of books), and spent 4 thousand and a summer’s work on a remodeled shed library out back instead. Mortgaged the Jeep to get the funds.  After two years’ restoration of the exterior, we got landmarked and were featured on the Historic Homes Tour. So proud. Worth all the time, effort, and expense. The house  is a Usonian style house, with a great room designed after, and built with materials identical to those of, the Danforth Chapel. The interior was superb when we got it, and as finances permit, will have historic furnishings. Our next step is to obtain national landmarking, which then automatically is accompanied by state landmark status.  That takes paperwork and funds to do, but we will do it.

Finally, we enjoy all the local arts and music shows at all levels, and though not able to be collectors, make an exception when bidding on Erik’s works entered in Masks. We support Old Town renewal wholeheartedly. And shows at the CSU Fine Arts center, the remodeled FCHS, are a great example of moving the arts forward in Fort Collins.  (Much more so than a new billion dollar football stadium. Just saying. Seriously, though, preventing CSU from bankrupting itself on such a project would do the arts in Fort Collins a great deal of good, believe me.

Thanks for asking, Carl Wangsvick and Anne Colwell

Mayorial Candidate Mike Pruznick Responds

 1.  Do you have a favorite Artist or Art Event in Fort Collins?
I could cheat this question by asking my arts-engaged family for the
right answer, but would rather be honest and say I don't have a
favorite local artist or art event. That said, I hear a lot of good
things about Beet Street, The Lyric, The Aggie, and read the Scene
periodically.  I support the arts and I'm on the record expressing my
concern about the decline in arts.  Arts teach kids how to express
themselves in a positive and constructive manor that overlaps into
personal and work relationships that can solve many of our social
problems before they start.
2.  How do you envision the future of the the Fort Collins Arts Community?
The Citizen comment section State of the City address made it very
clear that the people want more local small events (as opposed to a
huge stadium or Denver-style performing arts center).  Most arts events
today (that I'm aware of) are really economic events with art.  They
are about revenue for the non-artist.  I think it would be great if the
Oak Street Plaza had a little stage and artists could check it out like
a pavilion in the park, do performances, sell their wares, ask for
donations using the Amanda Palmer Ted Talk model.  By reducing overhead
and creating smaller and medium venues, the city gives everyone gets a
chance to try and a growth path for those that are successful.  I don't
like the city picking the artists, but providing that opportunity for
the people to pick.

3. Are you aware that Fort Collins does not have an Arts Council?  Do you think we need one?
I'm not sure what the right tool is, but the arts in public places
program is not enough (it is the city picking the winners and losers).
While pretty freeway overpasses are nice, I would rather see that money
go into developing local arts programs.  I like the idea of an Arts
Incubator to compliment the RMI facility for technology.
4.  How do you personally support the Arts in Fort Collins?
I have produced one video for FC Public Media and did a spark for
Ignite Fort Collins.  My daughter plans to take the FC Public Media
summer video class.  As my current business takes off, I hope to sponsor
more FC Public Media content providers.  My current business project,
Videos NARCing-out Government Misconduct (http://narc.pruzlabs.com),
was born out of my experience with FC Public Media and uses the pay
what you want if you liked it model.

District 6 Candidate Gerry Horack responds to Questions about the Arts in Fort Collins

1.  Do you have a favorite Artist or Art Event in Fort Collins? Barbara Moore

2. How do you envision the future of the the Fort Collins Arts Community? As is true of many subjects I would look to the knowledge and guidance of others more attuned to the arts and where they are headed in Fort Collins.

3.  Are you aware that Fort Collins does not have an Arts Council?  Do you think we need one?  Yes I think so.  Again I would look to the knowledge and guidance of others.

4. How do you personally support the Arts in Fort Collins?  When our children were, we took them to many arts events.  Now that we have grandchildren we expose them to all kinds of experiences including the arts.

Thanks for asking.

Amadeus at the movies

In 1984 the film Amadeus took the world by storm, creating a brand new outlook on what was seen as a stodgy, traditional musical genre. The stigma of classical musicians during the past century has been that of being uptight, boring, and even unneeded in the modern world. However, films like Amadeus show these musicians and composers as being just as exciting, outrageous, and entertaining as today’s celebrity artists. To reinforce this fact, the Fort Collins Chamber Music Society is presenting a special screening of Amadeus together with a pre-show reception, an event called “Too Many Notes: Amadeus.”
Along with the screening of the academy award winning movie, musicians from the Fort Collins Chamber Music Society will kick off the event by performing a selection of music ranging from Mozart to the Shins, all while wearing Henry Award-winning period costumes from OpenStage’s recent production of Amadeus. In addition to FCCMS’s live music, actors Jonathan Farwell, who played the role of Antonio Salieri in the touring version of the Broadway stage production of Amadeus, and Stetson Weddle, who has played Mozart in numerous stage productions of the film, will also be performing.

Half of the proceeds from each ticket sale will go back to the Fort Collins Chamber Music Society so we can continue the work of bringing classical music and culture to the Fort Collins community!

Interns Aren't Free

I have been teaching an Arts Intern Seminar Class this Semester for CSU's LEAP Program. The whole experience has gotten me thinking about how the variety of ways interns are treated by their host organizations and educated by their schools.  I have worked very hard to get my students to understand every facet of their host organizations in social, political, and civic contexts.  Unfortunately, many businesses and non-profit organizations believe an intern is simply a 'free' worker.  In fact, as a host organization you owe the intern a learning opportunity.  That might take extra time and effort on your part, but, in the long run you both have a better experience and possibly a future stellar employee, if you put in the time.  Here is an interesting article on the subject.  As always, I am open to you comments about this issue.

SHOCK ART/AIPP Project

Longmont, Colorado

Deadline for submission: May 12, 2015; 4:00 pm
The Art in Public Places Commission is pleased to release the 2015 Shock Art call to artists! Shock Art is a community public art project to enhance the switchgear boxes throughout the City of Longmont.
Scope of Project:
In 2011, Longmont’s Art in Public Places initiated Shock Art, a community public art project in which five designs were selected by community members to be transformed onto switchgear boxes throughout the community. Every year since this time, AIPP has commissioned five artists to paint the switchgear boxes.
Project Description:
The Art in Public Places Commission has identified five more switchgear boxes to paint in 2015. Each of the five boxes will be painted by a different artist or team of artists.
Eligibility:

But, still important to focus on every once in a while.  Teaching the Arts in School and out of school is critically important for kids.  Here is a Washington Post article of the Top 10 Skills learn from the Arts.    Also, there is a group of Artists that will be discussing Base Camp and how Artists can teach Arts during this established program this summer.  Just come to the next Hot Dish Meeting, This Thursday at 6:00 at the Laboratory.

Be An Artist in Residence at a National Park

Artists have created art in national parks since the late 19th century when famed Hudson River School painters captured the majestic views of our nation's western parks. Today, the sights and sounds in national parks continue to inspire artists in more than 50 residency programs across the country.

Whether staying in a remote wilderness cabin at Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska or contemplating history at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in Iowa or working in a contemporary studio overlooking the stone-lined fields at Weir Farm National Historic Site in Connecticut, these programs provide artists with unique opportunities to create works of art in varied natural and cultural settings.

There are programs for visual artists, writers, musicians, and other creative media. Programs vary, but residencies are typically 2 to 4 weeks in length and most include lodging. Often artists are invited to participate in park programs by sharing their art with the public.

Each park in this directory has its own application process and timeline, so please visit the park's website for further information.  Check out the list of parks offering Residencies here.

Art and Politics....on Netflix

Just watched "Art of the Steal" (on Netflix) about the Barnes Collection in PA and how it was 'stolen' and moved to Philly.  Makes you wonder what good is a will?  It is interesting how politicians love art when they view it as a commodity.  Too bad most of them don't think about the impact funding LIVING artists can have on their communities.  Great film, makes me also think about the current battle against the new CSU Stadium in Fort Collins.  The odds are against them as much as it was against those hoping the collection would not be moved to Philly.  Lots to think about.

P.s.  This painting, one of my favorites by VanGoh is included, I guess it makes it easier for me to see it in person.
