Work it.

Woodley's Fine Furniture is looking for artist of all styles who may be interested in periodically participating in what we call "open houses" at our store locations in 2015. What these "open houses" typically in tale is a local artist and a local vineyard for wine tastings over busy sale weekends. Artist displaying their works routinely sell their art for $50 to $500 depending if value is established so if you have artistic concepts to market that consumers find compelling there is revenue that can be made by participating. This is also something that could be a good fit for someone who principle enjoyment is sharing their talents with others in a retail setting. Any artistic offerings would have to fit in a high end furniture retail environment and would have to be screened via an interview process. The "open houses" that we do typically are done on major holiday weekends for maximum customer traffic exposure so being aware of that type of scheduling is a must so there is not scheduling conflicts. The artist needs to be committed to the 2 or 3 day event and work their display.

This is our 3rd year of teaming up with local artist and a lot of the original artist continue to want to be involved each year. Woodley's does NOT take a percentage of sale or charge for floor space. This is something we do to support local artist and at the same time make our stores more interesting to consumers while they shop for furniture.

Is it worth $35 to enter a show at CSU?

I am not sure of the answer, who really visits the Clara Hatton Gallery?  Anyway, if you think it is worth $35 here is the info.

    Observations and Collections 2015

    Deadline: November 7, 2014 Fee (USD): $35.00
Observations and Collections- National Juried Exhibition Colorado State University- Department of Art and Art History Clara Hatton Gallery February 9, 2015-March 6, 2015 Opening Reception: Friday, February 6, 2015 5-7 pm Artist Talk: Friday, February 6, 4-5 pm
In the sciences and in the social sciences, scholars use quantitative and qualitative methods to gather evidence about the world. They categorize, count, and measure, but they also interpret their observations by analyzing texts, by speaking to people for whom an object or a phenomenon might have a special significance or meaning, and then by relying upon their own perceptions to make sense of what they’ve discovered. Within the visual arts, artists also count and measure, they interpret, too, and the objects that they’ve collected and interpreted and observed can offer profound understandings of the commonplace, the bizarre, and the beautiful.
“Cabinets of Wonders,” from the German word, Wuderkammer, evokes practices of collecting and arranging and interpreting that were common in Europe during the Enlightenment, when scientists, social scientists, and artists arranged and collected in ways that were both empirical and romantic. We encourage artists whose creative choices are implied in their presentations and/or finished works. For this exhibition, we seek artists who ask themselves why these particular objects, arranged in these ways, and for what purpose? This exhibition invites a dialogue, an experience like conversation, between the artists and the audience, all of us still striving to comprehend our world.

See "The Addams Family" at Poudre High School

One of my favorite things to do is attend High School Musicals.  Possibly because I went to a crappy High School where the Teacher was a bit off and rumored to be sleeping with the cast.....but that is another story.  I like to fantasize I could have 'do overs' and go to a high School like the many fine ones here in Northern Colorado.  With that, take some time to attend This performance on Halloween night, if you can or at least one performance over its two week run!

Poudre High School will be holding the Opening Night performance of our fall musical, "The Addams Family", on Halloween Night at 10:00 PM.  Poudre High School is honored to have been awarded the opportunity to be the Colorado high school premiere in the state.  The musical will run through the following weekend in November.  We are very excited about this production and hope you can join us!  Buy tickets here

THE ADDAMS FAMILY features an original story, and it's every father's nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family - a man her parents have never met. And if that weren't upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he's never done before - keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday's 'normal' boyfriend and his parents.

    Show me your Art...

Have you purchased Art from a Northern Colorado Artist?  Send me a picture of it in your home.  The more local art we buy, the more local artists we support.  Think of it as crowd sourcing the old fashioned way.  Here is my latest purchase, two pieces made form Beetle Kill Pine by Local Artist Bonnie Lebesch.  Purchased at the "Celebrate Reuse" show at the Art Lab Fort Collins.   They were an Anniversary Gift for my husband.  We love them!

    Lovely Time!

    Read this before you vote.

Arts for Colorado, a non partisan nonprofit,  has put out a list of candidates response to questions about how important they feel the Arts are in Colorado.  I see a definite lack of real commitment for funding, which seems to be the way things are going.  Nonetheless, it is interesting to read and get a sense of who 'gets' it and who doesn't.  You can find the results here.

The Silent Generation The Greatest Generation The Baby Boomers Generation X Millennials Generation (next) We see Generations as a distinct class of people, differentiated by their preferences, personalitycharacter and qualities. Each group is attributed with major events such as wars, tragedies, triumphs or advancements. Instead of their differences, what if we focused on their similarities? What if Generations were viewed as a linear progression of knowledge, experience and experimentation? Wouldn’t that account for individuals like Michael Dell, who revolutionized computers by starting out building and selling upgrade kits from his college dorm? Michael didn’t invent computers; he stood on the shoulders of those who came before him and turned computers into an everyday appliance at work and home. Contrary to common myth, Albert Einstein was not a slow or difficult student. In reality, his father Hermann was an engineer and operated a company that manufactured electrical equipment. Is it possible that this father inspired his son to write his first scientific essay at the age of 15 about the magnetic field? Each of us is the compilation of the wit, wisdom and DNA of our ancestors. We may be collectively influenced by shared experiences, but perhaps even more so by values and attitudes passed down, and sometimes rejected, within a family or societal culture. During TEDxFrontRange June 13, 2015, we will explore this progression, hear from Generations who have successfully passed the baton, learn from the wisdom and share the wonder of all the Generations around us.

City of Greeley: 2015 Sculpture on Loan Program Call for Entry

Each artist may enter up to three works. Judging is based on the originality of the piece, its durability and suitability for outdoors and safety for the public. It is recommended that artwork be more than four feet in height.
In 1995, the Greeley Art Commission initiated the Sculpture on Loan Program with the placement of three pieces of art in the Downtown area.  Each year, the Commission solicits art to be on display for one year in public areas and community parks. The Greeley area consists of a viewing population of nearly 100,000.
We currently have twelve spaces to display outdoor sculpture near downtown Greeley businesses. It is Greeley’s honor to exhibit sculptures so the public may enjoy the artists’ talents and purchase accordingly. Each year, with citizen input the City purchases one or more sculptures to be added to the permanent art collection.
A statement about the inspiration for artwork or other interesting information must be included for the most current brochure.

    Entry Deadline: 11/9/14

    Looking for inspiration?

I always find inspiration in books.  Friends of The Loveland Library is having their semi-annual book sale this weekend at the Ranch.  My daughter's elementary school used to have a yearly book sale and at the end, they had so many left over that I started to make sculptures from the pages.  So, you never know how books will inspire your creative life!

    More artists, please!

The Coloradoan's Stacey Nick wrote a great article about local Artist Haley Hasler's new studio space and fellow artists who share the space with her; Gale Whitman, Kelsey Leppek, Del Harrow, Emmanuel Didier.   Great job!   Please write more stories about artists in our community.

    Murals are cool.

Local Artist Jennie Milner tells the story of three mural commissions.  I love her writing style!  Hopefully it will help some of you who have been thinking about going out into the community to do some art.

"I decided when I lived in upstate N.Y. among all the hunters and fishermen that we needed an art school, so I converted my garage and started teaching workshops after school.  I decided that my art kids were really good and we wanted to paint a mural - my first mural was fully funded by the community at the New York State Zoo.  18 kids under the age of 12!  Then I moved back to Colorado (my real home) and decided I would start painting.  At CSU I was a pre-vet major for half a second (took Biology 3 times to get an A), then a painting major and then finally graduated 6 years later with a B.F.A. in Metalsmithing.  I've been a metalsmith for 17 years!

I painted two murals on glass at Linton Elementary & then a piano for Pianos About Town.  Then I just happened to be sitting next to the facilities coordinator for Google corporate at an awards dinner and was hired to paint their loading dock in Boulder.  The concept was "Colorado weather - fires and floods - but with humor" - oh boy!  What a challenge.  I did the inside of that in January and the outside in May.

Remax of Cherry Creek called two weeks ago and wanted a mural before their open house on October 20th.  They had just undergone a huge renovation & built out this great space that they expected kids to go play while their parents were in closings but they'd painted it gray and it wasn't inviting enough.  The concept was "the real estate experience from the perspective of the children" - I added "as birds in high heeled shoes"!  I also thought about how my kids viewed looking at real estate and how disinterested they were unless it had a tree house, a pool in the yard, or polka-dot paint.  I mean, it takes a lot to intrigue a kid when we're talking about shelter... they prefer cardboard & duct tape after all.  So the little birds are doing everything BUT looking at the houses... one is dancing ballet, one is skateboarding & the parents are sort of looking & one is pointing with her eyebrows in a question but the parents are all with the children.  The houses are in the trees with polka-dots and stripes and trying desperately to be attractive!  haha

The Google loading dock was tricky because it was a high traffic door & I was constantly interrupted (what I thought was a 30 hour job turned into 50)!  The Remax mural was 9 hours, I expected it to be 8-10.  I was not interrupted once and nobody knew I was there.  I spent 7 solid hours painting with music in my ears (bliss) and came back the following day for 2 hours to outline with paint pens & clean up!  Phew.

    Here's the stats:
9 hours, 16 colors, 1,000 grand plié's, 8 brushes, 2 rollers, 3 paint pens, and zero paint spilled into my purse (which actually happened to my Maruca purse at the Google site)!

The best part is that I got paid very well.  Both murals were bid with a design fee & materials fee which were paid in advance... then the mural fee is basically $80/hour (and I literally guess how long it will take and if I have to work more hours... that's my "donation" because I didn't guess well enough!  I take into consideration the amount of distractions & weather & everything else I can consider tho').  I know that I can paint a simple design on a 10' x 8' wall in about 8 hours.  I also charged both companies my travel expenses.  Google paid a security guard to "take care of me" (aka bring me yogurt and granola bars and keep me company) so that I could paint mostly at night & they put me up in a hotel for one night.
Remax offered a hotel but I had a place to stay so I saved them the $.  I have a contract that says I own the mural and that no changes can be made without contacting me first.  It says that they get a chance to change the design during the design phase (3 drawings & then three redraws), but once the mural is underway no changes will be made without an additional fee.  It also says that I will pamper the mural for one year and then they can pay me $80/hour to repaint any damage for up to 10 years.
The New York Zoo mural was different... I charged the parents of the kids for a 4 week mural class (3 classes meeting on three different days of the week with 18 kids total x $55 = 990 - this is all the money I made on this mural which is great considering it was my first one ever).  The kids painted 3 panels of wood that were donated from the hardware store & those were our "pitch" to the zoo board.  They board chose a panel they liked best and we used that as our design.  The kids showed up in groups of 3 in 2 hour increments for two days & painted.  The hardware store donated all the supplies, the kids raised money in their neighborhoods & we used that money to hire a photographer & throw ourselves a big reveal party & each kid got a goody bag as "payment"!  The photographer allowed us to print unlimited quantities of the best mural image & we donated those as postcards to the zoo to sell in their gift shop!  In the end... we donated $100 to the zoo (money left over) and the cards which they made $3 each on for the next year!  It was amazing!

Getting paid is something most artists are bad at... and should be at first.  Opportunity is a delicious thing and nobody pays until you prove that you are worth it!

    Review of Ignite! Fort Collins

Local artist Tracey Kazimir-Cree wrote a review of last nights Ignite! Fort Collins event.  Thanks to Tracey.  You can write a review too!  Just send your review to elmorisette@gmail.com

"Last night, my husband and I attended Ignite Fort Collins #17 at the Lincoln Center. I think the last time we were able to attend was during the first year or so, when it was held at the Drake Center and, wow, I didn't realize how much it had grown! I love that it's held at the Lincoln Center and that it provides food trucks an opportunity. Makes for a great date night!

When you attend Ignite, you are treated to 14 locals, each speaking for five minutes about something he or she is passionate about. They could be businesspeople or artists or scientists or parents, professional speakers or not, but all of them share the thoughts that are burning inside of them. Whether the speakers are serious or funny, there's usually something to think about in each presentation.

My takeaway from the evening? We all have stories. We all have a bag of things we carry around with us that makes us who we are. Not everybody knows about that inner life we each have, unless we SPEAK UP. Ignite is a great way to share your story, your thoughts, your hobbies, your life, with your community. It's a warm and encouraging audience, so I'm even considering speaking some time in the future -- and I am by no means a person who likes getting up in front of a crowd.

Each talk is called a "spark" and I want to mention a few of the sparks that got me most ignited last night:

    • The spark that brought me to tears was by Lora Volwiler. "Wit, Style, and Grace – How To Handle Life’s Harder Decisions" was a talk about her ongoing battle with crappy life events  and how she is choosing to handle them.
    • The sparks that made me laugh the most were those by Judd Farner and David Firth.
      • Judd Farner is definitely a performer -- he had the whole audience laughing at his opinion on people who show up late to the movies because they'd "only miss the trailers." I personally agree with Judd about the moviegoing experience as a whole, so he really resonated with me. He and I would fight over our favorite seat were we in the same theatre at the same time, however.
      • I loved David Firth's discourse on etymology. He had me laughing and thinking at the same time, which I always find make the best presentations. This guy even has me looking up the derivation of my name, my family name and the names we're thinking of giving our daughter.
    • The best part about Ignite is learning about the folks that you see every day around town. Just because that woman you saw in the rest room is wearing the most gorgeous red high heels and you feel intimidated by her because she's dressed so nicely and you're wearing a t-shirt and jeans … well, that means nothing to me anymore. Turns out that Kristin Mastre ("Coming Out Of The Cannabis Closet And Why It’s Ok That You Do, Too") is exactly the type of person I'd be friends with because she has very similar struggles to my own and has a sense of humor about it.

You can watch the Ignite performances on YouTube and see the whole show from last night on http://www.ignitefortcollins.com/. Think about attending an Ignite in the future. The whole thing is run by volunteers as a labor of love that brings the community together. And you are a part of that community, one that is rich in smarts, talent, and creativity.

    Give it to me.

Were you one of the many people that went out last night and experienced some art?  Did you go to the "Create Reuse" show at the Art Lab?  Ignite Fort Collins?  The Canterville Ghost?  Loveland Studio Tour?  If you did, please send me your perspective.  This can be anonymous or I can use your name,it is up to you.  I would love to start a dialogue of community voices relating to the arts experiences they have had in Northern Colorado.  Just send a few sentences of your reflections here and let me know if you want me to use your name.  thanks!

    Quit Giving Your Art Away

This was posted by Christopher Addison of the Addison Ripley Gallery in Washington, DC. Akemi Maegawa hits the nail on the head, DON'T GIVE YOUR WORK TO AUCTIONS FOR FREE!  Organizations, if you ask Artists for their art, you should at least
    1. Pay artists 50% of the final auction price
    2. Provide the name and contact info of the winning bidder to the artist
    3. Give the artist at least one (maybe two) tickets to the 'Gala' if there is one.
    FREE BEER IS NOT ENOUGH!
I am looking at you, "MASKS at MOA".

" I was asked to recommend number of artists as a curator for a local non profit organization's fund raising event. I sent back an e-mail with my opinion.

    Hi (----),
Thank you for an invitation to be one of the curators for your 2015 (------) exhibition.
I am honored to be asked to be part of the event.
I will consider the list of the artists and would like to send it to you before November 3rd.
Before selecting and sending you their contacts, I have one question. What exactly are the benefits for participating artists to create their creative (----) for free except the exhibition opportunity and helping for "good cause"? Do they get free catalogs at least? I don't think I deserve a free catalogue being a curator but all the participating artists deserve one.
I know that most of the fund raising Galla tickets are often partially tax deductible but not for artists who donate their works or work time. Artists contribution is never considered tax deductible and I think the current tax system is totally unfair for that reason. Generally artists are less wealthy than those donors and collectors. However most of the events which require artists creativity use and abuse artists asking for free artwork and just saying it is for "good cause" to raise money for the organization. They give benefit for donors and collectors providing them great artworks with bargain price and tax benefit.
I am sorry about my direct question and an opinion. If I ask my colleague artists for help, most of them will help me with pleasure and probably they will agree to make (----) for your event but knowing the current unfair condition for artists in those fund raising events, I don't feel comfortable not to say anything. I never want to ask artists to make work and give away for free since nobody's time and creativity is free. We need to find a balance and fairness. And artists deserve better.
I know your organization is doing wonderful things for good cause but if you reconsider some of the current fund raising event condition and benefit for artists, and if you can give me your feed back, it would be really appreciated. I just want to develop more healthy and positive society for artists. And as a real supporter for artists, I would always like to speak out for artists who are quite often shy and scared.
    Best,

    Ignite Fort Collins Friday night!

    • Ignite Fort Collins is this Friday!  The performances will be at the Lincoln Center Performance Hall.  Doors open at 6 PM, show starts at 7 PM. Get there early or miss out on free beer and great music!

A ignite is a series of speakers who literally speak about anything they are passionate about – even if it’s nerdy, geeky, weird, or controversial.
Ignite Fort Collins is a no-pitch zone. If you’re talking on stage, it’s about something you’re passionate about, something you geek out over, something worth teaching to others.
Ignite Fort Collins is a family-friendly zone, so ages 4+ are invited to attend (Ignite Fort Collins: After Dark is 18+). Our speakers are asked not to swear (for the most part) and the audience is warm and receptive – they want to see your passion! Each event features 14 speakers and the night generally runs from 7PM to 9PM with a 30-minute intermission.
Ignite Fort Collins is filled with some of Fort Collins, Colorado’s best and brightest minds, on-stage and off. Our event has spread the word about Fort Collins very own Pay-What-You-Can-style cafe, our own local kick-starter variant, and even a local hostel. Businesses have started, ideas have flourished, and genius was made.
      This year's line up:
Kristin Mastre – Coming Out Of The Cannabis Closet And Why It’s Ok That You Do, Too
    • Tommy Maloney – Brady Bunch Without Alice
    • David Firth – Etymology: What Do You Mean?

    Eldon Ward Solo in Littleton

Fort Collins artist Eldon Ward's solo show at the Littleton Museum continues through October 26th. Eldon was invited to present the exhibit as a result of a "Best of Show" award at last fall's juried "Own an Original" show at the museum. Is this the answer to all of Fort Collins Art Programming woes?

Lots of chatter on Facebook and Twitter about this public art challenge grant presented by Bloomberg Philanthropies.  Seems a perfect fit for Fort Collins, right?  The only problem is that the grant needs to be submitted by the mayor or chief executive of the host city.  It seems that our Mayor and City Manager have some sort of problem with Beet Street/Streetmosphere.  I don't know what it might be because I have not received an email from my City Council Representative or any other City Representative regarding my request for continued funding for Streetmosphere.  Nice.

If any of you have gotten any sort of feedback, please let me know.

Also, if you think the City should consider applying for this grant, you can write to your city council here.

Or, maybe if you live in Loveland, you should apply.
