Is Art Criticism Dead?

Or are we just too damn nice in Colorado?  Chloe Veltman, former Arts Director for CPR news left her position because of the inability to be a critic of the Arts Scene in Colorado.  I have spoken to many Creative folks in Northern Colorado that are STARVING for input, good or bad.   That is one reason I started this blog, to get the conversation going....it hasn't worked as well as I had hoped.

What is the answer?  How do we connect and help one another grow in an atmosphere I have heard described as a "giant marshmallow"?

Streetmosphere is gone, and no one is raising a fuss, least of which the Fort Collins City Council.  Comfort is a good thing, but maybe not the most inspiring thing for an Artist.  What do you think?

Fort Collins welcomes Chinese Kite Artists for Kites in the Park Festival

The City of Fort Collins Recreation Department will host the 8th annual Kites in the Park Festival on Sunday, May 17 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Spring Canyon Park Community Park, 2626 W. Horsetooth Rd., Fort Collins. This free community event welcomes kite attractions from around the world for kite flying, demonstrations, and competitions. There will also be concessions, a free Kite Making Station and giveaways throughout the day. Biking or walking to the festival is encouraged as parking is limited.

This year, the City of Fort Collins is partnering with HobbyTown USA and the Confucius Institute at Colorado State University to welcome internationally renowned kite fliers, Yong Yang and Zhanjun Ding, from the Pengcheng Kite Folk Art Center of Weifang, Shandong Province, China. The Center was founded in 1992 and has rich experience in kite design, making and flying. Yang and Ding will fill the skies with a giant dragon kite measuring 50 meters high and large animal kites.

Spectators will be invited to become kite fighters. Kite specialists will offer lessons and interested attendees can battle Rokkaku kites against each other.

Children visiting the Kite Making Station will receive a free kite that they can decorate, attach tails to and fly. In addition, more than 100 kites will be given away throughout the festival to those who win contests or drawings. DJ Lil’ Joe with 99.9 The Point will emcee. Vendors will also be in attendance with summer program information and food and merchandise for sale.

The Loveland Arts Scene Kicks A**

KUNC's Art Reporter, Stacey Nick did a great story today about how the Art Scene continues to grow in Loveland.  My take?  Making affordable studio/rehersal space a priority is the center of all of the new, exciting, Arts activity in Loveland.  So inspirational!  See what can happen when a municipal Government gets behind meeting the needs of a creative community?

    Artworks Loveland is Expanding!

We are inviting you to an exciting first look of the build out of our new studios. We'll have coffee and pastries; you'll have a chance to connect with other artists and Artworks supporters and see the construction of our new studios. The new studios will connect directly with our current facility in Downtown Loveland, which houses 17 studios.

Please Join Us One of the Following Dates

    May 16 - Public Open House - 9:30 am Coffee/Networking & 10 am Tour

    May 30 - Public Open House - 9:30 am Coffee/Networking & 10 am Tour

    Please RSVP to info@artworksloveland.org.

The new studios will have a decidedly different feel from the current studios. Large sliding doors will serve as the entrance to each studio. To open up the entire space, there will be no drop ceiling, and each studio will feature a skylight.

What won't be different is the community of contemporary artists at Artworks, 24/7 artist access, and the affordable studio rates.

We are accepting applications now for artists interested in having a spot in our new studios. We have an application process, and our studios are first come, first served based on application date

No Streetmosphere for You. or me....

Following a reorganization in late 2014 and after struggling with both staffing and funding issues, the Board of Directors of Beet Street has decided to cease efforts to produce the 2015 season of Streetmosphere.

This would have been the fourth consecutive summer of Beet Street’s signature cultural program which transforms Downtown Fort Collins into a spontaneous, outdoor performing arts festival over an eight week period. With commitments from 47 acts (200 individuals), in-kind partnerships, and numerous special engagements, this season was shaping up to be filled with an exciting selection of our home-grown artistic talent. Regrettably, the volunteer efforts of the Board were unable to secure the funds necessary to fully support our creative talent in the way they deserve.

During the past four years, Streetmosphere has provided high quality, free performances that have employed hundreds of talented individuals, engaged dozens of local businesses and organizations who made financial contributions to support the events and helped to boost civic pride for our local, creative community. It is with a heavy heart that we recognize the 2015 season will be a summer without the presence of jugglers, magicians, dance troupes, brass quartets, balloon artists, opera singers, and painters in downtown Fort Collins.

We look forward to future opportunities with our civic partners and the very talented Northern Colorado community. By suspending Streetmosphere this summer, we are giving ourselves the time needed to put us on a stronger footing in the future.

We would like to thank the artists and performers for their time and dedication to the program and the sponsors who had donated to the 2015 Streetmosphere Season. For further information, contactinfo@beetstreet.org or phone 970-444-2338.

*Update....Arts Reporter Extraordinare Stacey Nick discusses Streetmosphere with Borad President Bruce Firestone here.
