Peter and the Starcatchers coming to Fort Collins

I cannot tell you how excited I am to see this play.  Several years ago, I visited NYC and took my chances at the TKTS booth, only to find this show sold out.  We ended up seeing Mary Poppins, which was spectacular....but that is another story.  Anyway, so excited to get a bit of New York in Fort Collins.  Interested?  Here are the details.....
PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, the most magical evening of madcap fun, is now on tour!  Hailed by The New York Times as "THE MOST EXHILARATING STORYTELLING ON BROADWAY IN DECADES," this comedy takes a hilarious romp through the Neverland you never knew.
The winner of 5 Tony Awards®, this swashbuckling prequel to Peter Pan will have you hooked from the moment you let your imagination take flight. PETER AND THE STARCATCHER  is the innovative and imaginative play based on the best-selling novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson.  A company of a dozen actors play more than a hundred unforgettable characters, all on a journey to answer the century-old question: How did Peter Pan become The Boy Who Never Grew Up?  This epic origin story of popular culture’s most enduring and beloved character proves that your imagination is the most captivating place in the world.

Don and Donna Beard named as Honorary Chairs of Masks at MoA

The Fort Collins Museum of Art has announced the selection of Don and Donna Beard as the 2015 Kaiser Permanente-Banner Health Masks Project Honorary Chairs. The Beards will be jointly honored throughout the Masks Project for their support of the museum as well as the Fort Collins community.

Don Beard was born and raised in Cheyenne, WY. A fourth-generation Coloradoan, Donna was born in Denver. The couple met while attending Creighton University in Omaha where Don also completed his medical degree at Creighton Medical School. While Donna interned in medical technology in Denver, Don did an internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital followed by his residency at Denver Children’s Hospital. In 1964, following Don’s work for the Indian Division of Public Health Service, he, Donna and their four small children moved to Fort Collins. Here, Don started The Youth Clinic while Donna developed her interest in stained glass art forms.

Both of the Beards became active as community volunteers, and it is for this work Don and Donna are being honored by the Fort Collins Museum of Art.

Donna served on the boards of United Way, Fort Collins Arts and Humanities Council, Parks and Recreation Board, Lincoln Center, and the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado and volunteered in many other capacities. Don became a member of the Fort Collins Museum of Art board when the organization moved into its current home, then called the Post Office Building. For the museum, it meant not only have a board member with an interest in the arts, but also a handyman whose talents in woodworking and metalsmithing expanded to HVAC repairs and renovation of the building’s historic exterior. Now retired, Don focuses even more fully on his many arts and crafts interests.

OPENSTAGE THEATRE’S UNNECESSARY FARCE AN ABSOUTE NECESSITY

by Tattle Tales

You only need to know one thing about OpenStage Theatre’s production of “Unnecessary Farce”: You will laugh until your sides hurt.
Coming off the high of Midtown Arts Center’s “Sweeney Todd” and an excellent Fort Collins Symphony performance, I was hoping the law of threes would hold true and dang if it didn’t. OpenStage has put together a sidesplitting production of playwright Paul Slade Smith’s door-slamming farce.
Director Judith Allen has become the company’s go-to-gal for comedic divinity. From Dan Tshirhart’s hilarious entry as police officer Eric Sheridan to a giggle-inducing chase scene between adjoining motel rooms, Allen keeps the laughs coming at a rapid pace.
As with most farces, the plot is simple. Set in two economy motel rooms divided by an imaginary wall, the action includes befuddled detectives, a corrupt mayor and clothes that refuse to stay on the actors’ bodies. Add to the mix a botched sting operation, a Scottish mafia headed by the “Big Mac,” deadly bagpipes from hit-man Todd (a plaid-clad David Austin-Groen) and a video camera catching all the action and you’ve got a fabulous way to spend two hours.
Allen’s casting draws heavily from the Comedy Brewers improv group, including Tshirhart, Austin-Groen, Jessica MacMaster as police officer Billie Dwyer, and Jessica Emerling Crow as accountant Karen Brown. Toss in Don Kraus as corrupt Mayor Meekly, Louise F. Thornton as his wife, Kirby Anderson as town hall security chief Frank — along with tons of clever word play — and you’ve got one divine comedy.
Ultimately, however, it’s the softer moments that truly kill, such as the Highland hitman’s ring tone and total devotion to plaid. (This is the same plaid I was sadly forced to wear throughout Catholic grade school. Yuck!)
Perhaps the biggest surprises were Kraus’s turn as a deviant mayor who makes the most of his brief lines and Thornton’s subtle performance as the mayor’s meek wife with a dark secret.
Credit is also due to Set Designer Dennis Madigan and Master Carpenter Michael Gorgan. Their doors slam and open smoothly: No difficult feat considering the flats are built in a distant warehouse then transferred to the Lincoln Center Magnolia Theatre stage shortly before opening night.
“Unnecessary Farce” runs through March 14, with a pay-what-you-can performance tonight, Feb. 19, and FAB Friday’s beer night on Feb. 20.

Howling Cow Cafe features Bellvue Artists and, oh, yea, Noosa.

Every Friday afternoon I take my three-year-old on an 'adventure'.  Now, an adventure to you or I might include plane travel, or investing in some expensive gear of some type.  But, for a three-year-old the bar is set kind of low.  Past 'adventures' have been lunch at the hospital cafeteria, ice skating, a trip to the garden center....you get the jist.  Anyway, last Friday, we decided to venture out to Bellvue to check out the new "Howling Cow Cafe" at Morning Fresh Farms.  We were pretty excited because we have been getting our milk delivered by Morning Fresh for six years.
It took us a while to find the place, my phone kept going in and out of service as we wound up and down hills.  Once we did, we sauntered in and purchased our favorite yoghurt.  The shop caters to the many bikers that use a beautiful afternoon for an outing.  I also noticed several local artists work featured in the shop.  Much to my daughter's dismay, we did not see any cows.  I guess they keep them away from the tourists so to not disrupt their production....Anyway, next time you are in Bellvue, check out The Howling Cow Cafe and buy some local art.

KEEPING BODY AND SOUL TOGETHER – AN INSTALLATION BY LARRY BOB PHILLIPS AND DAVID LEIGH

In an installation created especially for the University Art Museum, Albuquerque-based collaborators Larry Bob Phillips and David Leigh create an exhibition of fantastic and grotesque drawings that aim to overwhelm the audience with vast references and chaotic narrative. Phillips and Leigh create larger-than-life “pendants” in their studio.  Using an approach that could be considered an architect’s answer to large-scale collage making, images are painted on thin plywood veneer, cut out, and then curated in the gallery. Known for their giant drawings, the artists create a cartoon-like, horrific yet comedic landscape. Sponsored by the FUNd at CSU.

See it until March 28th at the University Center for the Arts, 1400 Remington Street in Fort Collins.

Open Stage Presents Unnecessary Farce

"Side-splitting laughter from start to finish!" - Around the Town Chicago.

This very necessary riot written by Paul Slade Smith and directed by Judith Allen, finds under-qualified - though blindly ambitious - detectives Eric Sheridan and Billie Dwyer setting out to catch the town's embezzling mayor in the act with his sexy accountant. Everyone ends up dead or in bed in this sensational new farce that centers around a botched sting operation in a dingy motel, where the the Scottish Mafia, deadly bagpipes, and a video camera all come into play.

Playing weekends, February 14 - March 14, at the Lincoln Center Magnolia Theatre in Fort Collins, CO.

TICKETS: 970.227.6730 or LCTIX.COM.

Ignite Fort Collins Accepting Submissions

Ignite Fort Collins: After Dark is like no other night of talks you’ve been to. Each presenter gets only 5 minutes to enlighten us, but they have to make it quick! Each event features 14 speakers and the night generally runs from 7PM to 9PM with a 30-minute intermission.
Presentation topics at Ignite Fort Collins: After Dark range from NC-17 to X, so all audience members and presenters have to be at least 21 years old. Certain presentations at Ignite Fort Collins: After Dark may leave you shocked, and you will likely learn something new. If you’re bored by the current topic, just wait 5 minutes and a new one starts.
Anyone from our community is welcome to submit a talk. You can literally speak about anything you are passionate about – even if it’s nerdy, geeky, weird, or controversial. If you want to protect your identity, you’re welcome to use a pseudonym.
Ignite Fort Collins is a no-pitch zone. If you’re talking on stage, it’s about something you’re passionate about, something you geek out over, something worth teaching to others.

Why go to a craft school?

I spent two weeks at Haystack in Deer Island, Maine.  It was a wonderful, intense time where I was allowed to totally immerse myself in my work.  Being a Mom, I appreciated the uninterrupted time to explore.  They even cooked for me!  It was heaven.  I also came away with the goals of furthering my education by going to Graduate School at MICA.  This is a wonderful article by the head of Haystack, Stewart Kestenbaum.

*They regret to mention Anderson Ranceh, our own Rocky Mountain Craft School in Snowmass.

Seeing Red in Loveland

We'll have you seeing RED this February's Night on the Town-- Downtown Loveland, Co

Red is hot. Strong. Emotional. Passionate. Red is Cupid and the Devil. Red is the hottest of the warm colors. Flashing red lights denote danger. In some cultures, red denotes purity, joy, and celebration. Red is the color of happiness and prosperity in China and may be used to attract good luck. Red is my favorite color. Oh, and Red as in Ruby Red Slippers, also a personal love.

Featuring works by friends Abbie Campbell, Anny Barton, Barb Stephens-Smith, Becky Franklin Hawley, Billie J Colson, Cari Jones, Jennie Milner, Jim Fronapfel, Karly Ree Ward, Kim Leszczynski, Lynn Henry,
Lori Rosedahl, Sandy Fritz, Sandra Gisonti, Suzi Holland, Julie Gillen and a company of many more, including live poetry readings at 6:00 and 7:00 pm by Sandra Gisonti Opening night is Feb. 13 5-7:00 at Lola's Fresh Patina.

Expanding...Expanding!

The Loveland Reporter Herald reports that Artworks Loveland is expanding their studio space.  Yea Loveland!  Community expanded through art.  Read all about it here.

Interview Your City Council Candidates!

I have an assignment for you, if you live in Fort Collins, I  am sure you have started to see political signs starting to pop up on  your neighbor's lawns.  Why not contact some of these candidates and ask them how they feel about arts funding in the city?  Send the responses to me and I will publish your interview on the blog.  It doesn't have to be a long interview, just enough to get an idea of where they stand.  I also feel it would be much more powerful, if we each ask candidates from our own district.  I can certainly send out a questionnaire (and I might if this doesn't work)  but for now, how about some citizen activism?  Send your responses to elmorisette@gmail.com  I look forward to your responses.

Einstein's Light

Join us as we welcome writer and film director, Nickolas Barris with host Bruce Adolphe, for three repeat Colorado performance events focusing on this much acclaimed documentary film! Originally shown in January 2015 as the closing event of the UN’s Paris kick-off celebration of the Year of Light observing the 100th Anniversary of Einstein’s theory of relativity, we’re honored to bring this important documentary to Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins.

Additional highlights include: hands-on science exploration for kids; Metropolitan State University’s with a member of the MSU Physics Department (Denver) and UC Astrophysicist Dr. Michael Shull (Boulder and Fort Collins) in a discussion about Einstein’s science then and now; and a live performance by brilliant young violinists Clara Lyon (Denver and Boulder) and Emily Ondracek-Peterson (Fort Collins) with composer, Bruce Adolphe, at the piano.

Fort Collins’ event is a collaboration with the CSU STEM Educators Club, and the unveiling of a new EOC STEM Friday Expedition called “Beams of Light.”
