Call for Entries Artworks Loveland is currently accepting entries for the upcoming Photography Unsettled exhibtion

About the call:
Artworks Loveland will be participating in Month of Photography Denver! MoP is a Colorado-based biennial celebration of fine art photography with hundreds of collaborative public events throughout Denver and the region. The theme for MoP 2017 is “Up to the Edge.” This theme serves as an exploration of the far-reaching applications and concepts emerging in photography today.

Photography Unsettled aims to showcase the wide range in contemporary artists' practice which features photography in some way, as well as the many mediums of art which are mixing with photography so that it belongs less and less to a specific medium or category. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit up to three pieces which illustrate this theme. Artworks is seeking mixed media works as well as works which use photography in an unconventional way. Although mixed media works will be accepted, photography must be the main component of the accepted pieces.

Applications will be reviewed by juror Kia Neill and curators Bre Nielsen and Ronda Stone. Two prize-winning pieces will be selected during a blind jury process. $250 will be awarded to the artist who is selected as the Juror’s Choice and $150 to the artist who is selected as the Curators’ Choice.

The application can be found online at: https://artworksloveland.submittable.com/submit. The application deadline is January 2, and there is a $25 application fee.

About the Juror:

Kia Neill is a multidiscipline artist working in mixed media drawing, painting, photography and sculpture. Neill has lived and worked in a number of cities throughout the U.S. as a professional artist doing public and private commissions, exhibitions, lectures, jurying and teaching college and continuing education for 15 years.

Neill is native to Chicago Illinois, received her MFA from The University of California, San Diego, and relocated to Denver CO in 2014 from Houston Texas, where she was Full-time Faculty of 7 years at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston Glassell School of Art.  Neill currently teaches at the University of Denver School of Art and Art History, and in the Breckenridge Arts District. Pattern Language A solo exhibition of work by former Artworks Loveland Artist-In-Residence, Barbara Gilhooly

About the exhibit:
Rich in color, texture, and symbols, Gilhooly’s work references a personal vocabulary of botanical forms, patterns, and invented abstractions. She’s intrigued by both the complex and the simple nature of plant forms and finding connections with mechanical structures.
In this exhibit, Gilhooly is exploring concepts of systems theory and the Fibonacci sequence. Diagrams of complex layers carved into the wood surface, layers of patterned motifs, systematic webs connecting random nodes, and patterns layered in landscapes are some of the imagery depicted. She continues to be fascinated with the visual representation of abstract ideas and exploring the invented systems used to envision information.

About the artist:
Barbara Gilhooly was born in North Dakota in 1963. She attended the University of North Dakota and received her BFA in 1986. Concentrating on printmaking and sculpture, Gilhooly earned her MFA from Colorado State University in 1989. She also worked at Artworks Loveland as an Artist-In-Residence during September and October of 2015.
Gilhooly’s interest is in the process of making rich, active surfaces, which developed from her background as a printmaker. She often finds herself treating her materials with a similar emphasis on line and surface, satisfying her constant need to draw, carve, etch, engrave, paint, scratch, stitch, and print lines.
Gilhooly’s technique consists of layering paint and carving into areas and then subtracting to reveal elements from previous layers. This technique not only contributes to the depth and texture of the surface, but also captures the effect of the underlying history of the paint.

WE'RE LOOKING FOR ARTISTS FOR PUBLIC ART PROJECT
We are excited to announce the kick-off of a public art project in conjunction with Denver Arts & Venues. The Denver Arts & Venues Public Art Program seeks to commission an artist, or team of artists, to create an original work of art for the exterior façade of a building on Zoo property, adjacent to City Park and facing City Park’s Duck Lake. The panel is particularly interested in artworks that explore the interplay between the built and natural environment, that celebrate Denver Zoo and City Park, that are sensitive to nearby wildlife, and are calming yet innovative. The project is open nationally to all artists and the deadline to apply is Monday, January 23. Read the full RFQ .here
