Coming up at the CCC in Fort Collins

Most interesting to me is the annual "Open Hang" event August 12-15 and 18-22.  A kind of 'potluck' Arts Show.  Anyone can hang anything and some of it is very good and some of it....isn't.  But, best of all is it is a Community Building event so....Get something ready to hang!

Whether it’s neuroscience or physics, science offers musical inspiration and even provocative compositional concepts that have been the focus of many of his recent works. From Music of Memory, recently premiered at the Brain and Creativity Institute in LA, or Einstein’s Light, a new film with his score recorded by Joshua Bell, science and scientists fire up his musical imagination. Bruce Adolphe, resident composer at the Brain and Creativity Institute in LA and Lecturer at The Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center in New York, will explore the details of how this works. Samples of his works, performance from the piano, improvisational games and his highly entertaining Piano Puzzlers are all part of this engaging event. Join us for this intimate opportunity to learn more about music in general, ask those questions you’ve always wanted to have answered and meet this remarkable internationally known composer.

CCI Call for Grant Panelists

Colorado Creative Industries (CCI) is seeking advisory review panelists for the FY16 Colorado Creates grant program. Panelists are integral to CCI's grants process. They review applications, provide comments, and score applications in order to recommend recipients of CCI grant awards.

Colorado Creates is Colorado Creative Industries' largest grant program. This award provides financial support to help nonprofit cultural organizations and communities produce arts and cultural activities, bringing jobs to their communities and enhancing the quality of life. In the last grant competition, 162 grants were awarded totaling just over $1,000,000 across the state.

The grant is reviewed annually in the months of July and August through a peer review process modeled after the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Selected panelists will demonstrate expertise through involvement in one or more sectors of the creative economy in Colorado. Panelists include artists, arts administrators, and community leaders who represent diverse geographic, ethnic, philosophical and aesthetic perspectives. Panelists are selected from each defined region to conduct an online review of applications which generally takes between 15 - 30 hours. Next, panel members meet at an all-day, in-person meeting in July or August to discuss and recommend applications for funding. The panel review role is a volunteer position, however, travel (meals, lodging, mileage etc.) will be covered when applicable.

NOTE: Current Colorado Creates applicants are not eligible to serve as panelists; however, applicants are encouraged to review during an organizations "sit out" year.

Residents of Colorado are encouraged to nominate themselves or their peers to serve as a panelist. To be considered for the 2016 cycle please complete the panelist interest form before Friday, June 26. Learn more and apply.

CSU's LEAP Program Annonunces New Director

Associate Professor Constance DeVereaux has been named the new director of the LEAP Institute for the Arts, beginning July 1. DeVereaux brings a rich background in scholarly and applied studies of arts leadership, an impressive array of publications, and a host of national and international contacts to the program.

The LEAP Institute for the Arts (Leadership Entrepreneurship, Arts Advocacy, and the Public) – founded in 2012 by faculty and staff within the School of Music, Theatre and Dance, and the Department of Art and Art History – matured quickly into a Center within the College of Liberal Arts, offering both a master’s degree and a minor.

Paired with practical skills in management, marketing, planning, and communication, the LEAP master’s program produces the kind of arts leader that can make a difference in the world, preparing students for a career in the ever-changing, dynamic world of arts and culture.

The LEAP minor is designed to enhance the skills of current undergraduates that are needed to be a successful artist beyond the studio, stage, classroom, therapeutic practice, and performance hall.

“Our aim, since the inception of LEAP, is to provide opportunities for students to become leaders in their chosen communities,” said DeVereaux. “I have great enthusiasm about the prospect of leading a program designed to produce tomorrow’s leaders.”

DeVereaux joined the LEAP faculty in fall 2013, and has made significant strides in establishing the reputation of the program, and its students, on a regional, national, and international level. “I am delighted to welcome Dr. DeVereaux to this new position, and have high hopes for her leadership as LEAP continues to solidify its reputation in the arts community and build its undergraduate minor and graduate masters programs,” expressed LEAP Interim Director Bruce Ronda.

“Leadership is a collaborative effort,” said DeVereaux. “I’m part of a great team of colleagues and students, and together we are changing the face of the arts in Fort Collins and beyond.”

"The Place Between”

Artists Scott & Alicia Laumann have lived in 30 unique locations in their combined lifetimes.  They have logged 92,000 miles between locations. Their ten-year old daughter has lived in twelve different places during her short life.  This summer, in conjunction with their show at Artworks Loveland on June 12, they will move back to the Front Range with the intention of putting down roots, hoping to use their many travels to create meaning in a single place.

“The Place Between,” their first collaborative show in a gallery space, examines American attitudes towards mobility, community and sense of place through the lens of their own personal experience. Through new video works, art installations, dialogue with the community, and a durational performance on opening night, they explore their own unresolved attitudes toward space and place, examining their transient past and local future.

“This has been an extremely personal project for both of us," Scott Laumann said. "On one hand, we value the freedom of mobility and the promise of future. On the other, we long for the foundation of place, people, and community.  We’re suspended in tension between these two desires. The fact that we are physically moving as a family becomes an extension of the show, an additional “artwork” that will play out over time. We really want to have a two-way dialogue with the local community – to listen to their perspectives as much as to bring our own.”

When:
June 12 - July 3, 2015
Opening: June 12; 6pm-9pm
Live performance / sculpture making: 6-8pm
Dialogue / open house : July 3, 4:30 - 7pm, talk-back with the artists: 6:30 pm

Ignite! Fort Collins

Ignite! Fort Collins is an eclectic collection of 'talks' given by community members.  There will be 14 presentations with an intermission. The presentations will be selected by the Ignite Fort Collins Team based on a number of factors including diversity of topics and speakers. Our goal is to choose talks that are interesting, educational, thought-provoking, and engaging.

The event is on Friday, June 19 from 6:00-10:00. We’ve rented out the BIG theater in The Lincoln Center… so that means more seats available!

Each ticket is $15! Don't wait, snag 'em now!

"Good Day" book authors host a Nepal Fundraiser

Local Artists Gale Whitman and Bob Komives will host a fundraiser Tuesday, June 2.  A family in their neighborhood was deeply affected by the recent earthquakes in Nepal.  For their story and details of the fundraiser at the Rio Grande Restaurant, please click here.  The event Tuesday night will feature live music and a silent auction, with proceeds helping rebuild the village of Pokhari-Chauri.  Bob & Gale are donating a Good Day book and one of our art prints to the silent auction.  If you'd like to contribute but are not able to attend the event, please visit: www.gofundme.com/nepalpc.
