True West at Open Stage

January 8-January 31, 2015

By Sam Shepard Directed By Sydney Parks Smith

“Electrifying, dangerous, and chillingly funny.” – The Guardian
In Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Sam Shepard's classic black comedy, two brothers unexpectedly reunite in their quest for a new life in a savvy, brooding dark comedy. Austin, a successful screen-writer and family man, yearns to ignite his lackluster and predictable existence – something his writing has failed to do. His older brother, Lee, a down-and-out drifter from the Mojave Desert, hunts for fame and glory. When Lee suddenly shows up, unannounced, tensions rise as their dueling double-natures interfere with a life-changing screenplay collaboration. Meanwhile, the boys find that their own roles reverse with absurdly hazardous consequences.
Contains adult language.

Does Loveland want (Or need) a DDA?

LOVELAND, Colo. – Dec. 16, 2014 – The campaign to support the creation of a Downtown Development Authority (DDA) in Loveland launched today, encouraging downtown businesses and residents to rally for the future of a thriving downtown corridor. Following the Dec. 16 city council second reading, the creation of the Loveland DDA is set for vote on Feb. 10, 2015.
The Loveland Downtown Partnership (LDP,) a private organization to lead downtown development efforts, has set the structure of the DDA. The LDP is a 501c4 nonprofit agency that will function as an umbrella organization working in collaboration with the DDA, which will bring in revenue for redevelopment projects from property tax increments.
“A vibrant downtown is at the heart of every successful community. A solid foundation, such as a DDA, is necessary for Loveland’s downtown to grow and thrive,” said Doug Rutledge, a principal with KL&A structural engineers and builders and Loveland DDA proponent. “Voting for a DDA supports a better community, the future of our downtown businesses and better public infrastructure such as streets, sidewalks, lighting, landscaping, parking, and more.”

If the sorted history with Fort Collins DDA is any indication, forming a DDA for Loveland might be adding one too many 'cooks' to the kitchen. What do you think?

Artist Teresita Fernández gives us a kick in the pants

  1. Art requires time — there’s a reason it’s called a studio practice. Contrary to popular belief, moving to Bushwick, Brooklyn, this summer does not make you an artist. If in order to do this you have to share a space with five roommates and wait on tables, you will probably not make much art. What worked for me was spending five years building a body of work in a city where it was cheapest for me to live, and that allowed me the precious time and space I needed after grad school.
  2. Learn to write well and get into the habit of systematically applying for every grant you can find. If you don’t get it, keep applying. I lived from grant money for four years when I first graduated.
  3. Nobody reads artist’s statements. Learn to tell an interesting story about your work that people can relate to on a personal level.
  4. Not every project will survive. Purge regularly, destroying is intimately connected to creating. This will save you time.
  5. Edit privately. As much as I believe in stumbling, I also think nobody else needs to watch you do it.
  6. When people say your work is good do two things. First, don’t believe them. Second, ask them, “Why”? If they can convince you of why they think your work is good, accept the compliment. If they can’t convince you (and most people can’t) dismiss it as superficial and recognize that most bad consensus is made by people simply repeating that they “like” something.
  7. Don’t ever feel like you have to give anything up in order to be an artist. I had babies and made art and traveled and still have a million things I’d like to do.
  8. You don’t need a lot of friends or curators or patrons or a huge following, just a few that really believe in you.
  9. Remind yourself to be gracious to everyone, whether they can help you or not. It will draw people to you over and over again and help build trust in professional relationships.
  10. And lastly, when other things in life get tough, when you’re going through family troubles, when you’re heartbroken, when you’re frustrated with money problems, focus on your work. It has saved me through every single difficult thing I have ever had to do, like a scaffolding that goes far beyond any traditional notions of a career.

In May of 2013, two years after her appointment to President Barack Obama’s Commission of Fine Arts, Teresita Fernández delivered a spectacular keynote address to the graduating class at her alma mater, Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts.  This list was part of the address.

Thanks to Hamidah Glasgow for bringing this to my attention.  My favorite part?  Being gracious to EVERYONE!  Don't burn bridges or talk behind each other's backs.  This doesn't help ANYONE.  We all have a story and we can all help one another, it is essential for a vibrant community of Artists.  Onward!

Haley Hasler included in "Get Real: New American Painting"

Northern Colorado Artist Haley Hasler has been included in "Get Real: New American Painting" at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville, Florida.  The show has also been reviewed by American Art Collector Magazine. The show is up until January 4, 2015.  Way to represent Northern Colorado! Congrats!

Here is the write up for the show.
"A selection of artists from across the country—Haley Hasler, Jason John, Andrea Kowch, Bryan LeBoeuf, Jenny Morgan, Kevin Muente, Frank Oriti, and Kevin Peterson—provides a snapshot of contemporary realist painting in the United States in Get Real: New American Painting. The exhibition’s heavily figurative focus explores themes that have persisted throughout the recent history of American realist painting such as narrative portraiture and social, psychological, and magical realism.
The eight artists present a multifaceted view of the American experience, contrasting the historic and the contemporary, pastoral and urban landscapes, the personal and the universal, the immanent and the transcendent. Through the eyes of these painters, the viewer may travel between the magical depictions of a distant American heartland in work of Kowch or Muente to the hardscrabble, urban worlds of Oriti or Peterson. Whether their inspiration is drawn from memory or reality, the artists strike a balance between the everyday and the epic as seen in LeBoeuf’s tightly controlled theatrical compositions or John’s surreal scenes that seem to be in a state of perpetual motion. Aspects of identity and relationships, as well as issues of sexuality and femininity, are best explored through the works of Hasler and Morgan.
The products of diverse educational and geographic roots, these young painters, mostly under the age of forty, are charting a path for American realist painting. Although rooted in a strong tradition of art history, they are also very much products of the modern world and the global information age"

Seeing Red? Red is hot. Strong. Emotional. Passionate. Red is Cupid and the Devil. Red is the hottest of the warm colors. Flashing red lights denote danger. In some cultures, red denotes purity, joy, and celebration. Red is the color of happiness and prosperity in China and may be used to attract good luck. Red is my favorite color. Oh, and Red as in Ruby Red Slippers, also a personal love.

Mad & a Goat

Fort Collins Fringe Festival Benefit on Friday, January 9, 7pm at Bas Bleu Theatre Company - Fringe Benefits presents Mad & a Goat. The evening will begin in the Gallery Bleu with drinks and appetizers, an interactive scavenger hunt, a drawing for an Estes Park get-a-way and a Fringe Photo-booth! In addition, 2015 Festival Passes will be given to those wearing their fringiest fringe.

At 8pm, we will move into the theatre for Mad & a Goat, a piece of extraordinary theatre by MFA Playwright Candidate Diana Small with Heather Johnson (Fort Collins) and Paige Tautz (Santa Barbara, CA.)

Mad & a Goat is a two-women show about one woman, who, to free herself from college debt, joins a Wyoming goat farm she inherits from her occult-leader birth parents. There is seduction. There is beer. There are biscuits. And let’s not forget about the goats. The play had a workshop production in the first ever Fort Collins Fringe Festival at Bas Bleu Theatre in August 2013 and then another production in the Austin, TX FronteraFest at Salvage Vanguard Theatre in January 2014 made possible by a Scriptworks SeedSupport grant.

If the play featured another character, it would be Money: as a villain, as a sidekick, a ghost, a lover, a muse, a comic. The play is in conversation with the ever-growing population of student-debt burdened millennials as we negotiate between our “star privilege” nurtured by social media and the economic boom of our 90s childhood, and the realities of the present economic slump— there is just not enough money to go around, even if you have a shiny college degree and were told by your parents you’re infinitely special.

There will be a Liz Lerman-style Critical Response Process directly after the play.

All proceeds support the 2015 Fort Collins Fringe Festival.

Tickets are $20 until Dec 31; $30 Jan 1-8 and $35 at the door. Purchase Tickets Here.  Less than 100 tickets are available!

Ask YOUR City to fund Cultural Improvements

Over the past year, the potential list of capital improvement projects for the City of Fort Collins has been narrowed from approximately $400M to $75M through public outreach, Council work, and staff refinement. The projects on this website are currently proposed to go before Council on January 20, 2015 for referral to the April 7, 2015 ballot.

Up for consideration is renovation of the Community Creative Center at the Carnegie Library.  This renovation would include stairways to all parts of the building and bathroom improvements to make this building more accessible and open.  Check out the list here and let your City know how you want your tax dollars spent.

Disappointed.

Letter to the Editor is yesterday's Coloradan
"I am sorely disappointed to see the further decline in arts and culture reporting suffered by the Coloradoan newspaper. The Dec, 18 Ticket, with the cover and three interior pages dedicated to the Las Vegas Bowl football game, is a clear indication that the Coloradoan sees arts coverage as expendable. Was it because there wasn't any other arts-related news happening in the community? Anyone who lives here knows that's surely not the case. Or maybe it's because we can look forward to seeing arts reporting in the sports section?
In a city with such a high level of cultural offerings we should be able to expect that at least once a week there is a professional effort to report on these pursuits, people and events that give Fort Collins and Northern Colorado its unique character that so many of us value.
Jeanne Shoaff lives in Fort Collins."

From the Coloradoan-

"Fort Collins' top municipal employees will ring in 2015 with bigger pay checks.
The City Council on Tuesday voted to give raises to the three employees who work directly for the council: City Manager Darin Atteberry, Interim City Attorney Carrie Daggett and Municipal Judge Kathleen Lane.

Atteberry's salary will be increased 3 percent to $244,839. His total compensation for the year, including retirement contributions and car salary, will be $296,706.
Daggett, who has been interim city attorney since July and the death of longtime City Attorney Steve Roy, will receive a 4.5 percent raise to $151,909 a year.
Lane's salary will be increased 4 percent to $133,760 a year. Lane works part-time for the city."

Artspe@k Founder Leaving Murphy Center

I received sad news from Barbara Jensen at the Murphy Center.  She will be leaving the center and the wonderful Art Program she created, Artspe@k, in December.  Artspe@k gave homeless participants an opportunity to use art as a therapeutic way to deal with other parts of their lives they don't have control over.  I had the opportunity to work with the folks at Artspe@k in the winter of 2013.  While I enjoyed my time with the participants, I was particularly impressed with Barbara and her ability to relate to the participants in the program with out letting them get away with not delving deeper.  She is a fantastic spirit and I can't wait to see what she does next!

Thanks, Barbara!

Taggart & Franklin in Loveland

Musicians Franklin Taggart and Todd Silas will be performing during the artist reception this Friday night at Artworks Loveland from 6:30-8:30.  While you are there, also check out the exhibit Cerulean and the The Artists Behind the Art.

Cryptic, but exciting

Okay, Judd Farner and some cohorts are hosting a pop up art happening art the Art Lab this Friday.  He is being kind of sly about what it is, exactly.  But, knowing Judd, it will be pretty darn cool.  Here is his Facebook post,"The New Commedia - Pops Up Tuesday through Friday, 7-10 @Art Lab Fort Collins. Stop in and help us make some ‪#‎newtheatre‬! ‪#‎thenewcommedia‬ ‪#‎art‬ ‪#‎fortcollins‬" Do you  see what I mean when I say 'criptic'?  I am excited because to me it screams ART!  COMMUNITY!  If you are in Old Town on Friday night, Go! Go! Go!

Would you ask Doctors to work for free?

Salud Family Health Centers would like to invite local artists and members of the community to join us at our Fort Collins Salud clinic on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. for an open meeting to discuss ideas about how to bring art into the clinic. Click here to see the Salud flyer for more information.

I hope 'discussing ideas' includes how to pay artists for their time and effort.  This seems to be a great organization who gives free or reduced care to under served populations.  If I went to this informational session, I would be interested to ask if the practitioners and staff who work for Salud donate their time, as they are asking Artists to do.

Changes at Mama Said Sew

Change is afoot at Mama Said Sew these days and as they say change is good. After dedicating the last five years to growing this community, Angela Gray has decided that it’s time for her to step away from Mama so she can spend more time with her family.

"It’s been such a pleasure to meet so many of you, watch you grow as sewists, and see the wonderful things you've made because of Mama Said Sew. I still plan on being active in the crafting community as well as here in the shop."

What’s going to happen to the shop you may be wondering. Well, the fine folks upstairs at Jukebox Quilts will assume the space to grow their very own quilt shop. So there will still be a shop here with fabulous fabric, great classes, and knowledgeable staff.

Thanks, Angela for cultivating creative community here in Fort Collins.

Travel to Nicaragua tonight at the Library

Please join Jane Mirandette for a presentation on building libraries in Nicaragua this evening at  7:00 PM in the Community Room at the Old Town Library in Fort Collins.

They visited a just completed expansion of a lending library in Nicaragua which was the first lending program in the country. This library recently become a sister library to Poudre River Public Library District in Fort Collins. They installed the first automated software system in a public library in Nicaragua with the help of Carol Gyger and IT Administrator Victor Zuniga who spent weeks customizing the KOAHA open source software program for us. Victor traveled with us to San Juan del Sur in April to install KOAHA on our new computers provided by the Gillette Wyoming Rotary Club and trained our staff to implement it.

Library designer Justin Martinez, who designed the Council Tree library in Fort Collins, traveled to San Juan del Sur in February of this year to design the renovation of an old building for our new library and has recently initiated a Indiegogo Crowd Source fundraising site with a video provided by Miguel Buenrosto and Maria Fernandez Herrera, documentarians who traveled from Mexico to SJDS with Justin and I to document the restoration process. That video is available to view (for the next 2 weeks) at our Indiegogo site.

Jane Mirandette is the President/Treasurer of the Hester J. Hodgdon Libraries for All Program located in Loveland, Colo.
