Paint a Piano

jolan von plutzner.jpgThe City of Fort Collins Art in Public Places Program, in cooperation with community partners Bohemian Foundation and Downtown Development Authority, seek to involve local artists/teams by commissioning them to paint murals or otherwise artistically decorate working pianos. The artists/teams are required to develop and submit a visual concept for the mural to be painted or decoration to be added to a functioning piano. Deadline for submissions: April 8.

The artists/teams will be required to work on the piano in Old Town Square this summer or other APP determined location in Fort Collins over the winter. The intent of this project is to create the attraction of an artist working on site and to place decorated pianos around the Fort Collins area.

The Future of the Arts in Fort Collins is up to US

Today, I helped empty out the former offices of "Beet Street".  For those of you who don't know, Beet Street was the most recent Arts Organization to ebb and flow through the fair City of Fort Collins.  It started out great, lots of money, financed by the Downtown Development Authority, the City Council, Mayor and City Manager were all on board.  Lots of money was spent on arts programming, fancy socials, office supplies (Lots of office supplies).  They developed a terrific Community Arts Program called Streetmosphere.  Then, they got a little too big for their own good.  Much time was spent developing AiR (Arts Incubator of the Rockies) and because many of the Artists here in Fort Collins are open, good, helpful people, many of us pitched in to 'help'.  We helped develop curriculum, run pilot programs and participate in charettes.  We gave our time, expertise and in some instances, money to a program that is now owned by Berea College. Berea is using this curriculum to help Artists in Appalachia be more successful.  The question is what did we, the Artists left in Fort Collins get from 'helping' AiR.  The answer, as far as I can tell is a City Leadership that was burned by their experience with Beet Street/AiR and are reluctant to support the Arts in any way in the future.  I challenge you, next time you are talking to an employee of the city and ask them about Beet Street.  Watch the eyes roll.  And why shouldn't they?  We were all screwed by Beet Street/AiR.

So, what do we do now?  Where do we go from here?  While cleaning out the Beet Street office, I found the City's Cultural Plan, written in April 2008.  The cultural plan, written 8 years ago has  6 stated goals. The executive Summary sums them up as :

"The Cultural Plan goals include:
1. Develop the right mix of cultural facilities to meet the needs of the community and to make
Fort Collins a destination attraction.
2. Develop an Arts Council to promote and support the business of the arts.
3. Build Fort Collins’ identity as a cultural center and destination by increasing the visibility of
the arts, culture, and science activities in Fort Collins.
4. Develop sustainable funding, public and private, to support arts, culture, and science
programs.
5. Employ arts, culture, and participatory science to improve Fort Collins’ quality of life,
strengthen the local economy, and increase tourism.
6. Ensure availability of arts education programming to our youth through future community arts
centers, collaborations between schools and arts groups, training and resources for teachers, and
funding"
Throughout this document, the plan is to develop AND fund an Arts Council.  If Beet Street had been funded by the City, the whole Beet Steet/AiR drama wouldn't have happened.

Why don't we have an Arts Council?

Why wasn't Streetmosphere picked up as a City Program?

Because, we as citizens let the City Council get away with NOT doing it!  Follow the link, read the Cultural Plan and let your City Representatives know you want the City to Fund and Arts Council and/or an Arts Coordinator for the City.  We need to annoy them until they do something.  You can send an email to all of our City Leaders at once by using this handy link. cityleaders@fcgov.com

Debut Presents CHARLOTTE'S WEB

Springtime, when everything begins anew: The winter ice thaws, flowers start to bloom, and a young pig is born. Not just any pig…but some pig!  This spring, Debut Theatre Company catches you in Charlotte’s Web, a tale of this remarkable pig, a young girl, a spider, and the strand that binds them together: friendship. You will meet fun loving Fern, her mischief-making brother, Avery, their soft-hearted parents, and a few opinionated barnyard animals, as they, along with everyone else, are caught in the magic of a little pig named Wilber. All Wilber wants is a friend, but his options seem limited to a cranky sheep, silly geese, and Templeton, the self-centered rat, until he meets Charlotte, the loving, caring spider.  Charlotte shows the true meaning of a friend as she sets out on a mission to save Wilber’s life, even if it means the end of her own.

As Wilber makes new friends, so will you as the Debut Players show the lengths that friendships can go, both on and off the stage.  United to create their “magnum opus,” the Debut Players Troupe work as individuals to design, build and act in the plays they create as a troupe.  In many ways, Charlotte’s Web symbolizes the bond of Debut Theatre Company: each actor, each strand, pulled together, pulling together to form one single web, one show.  With pride they present it to Northern Colorado so each of us might re-discover what friendship can mean, and what it can help accomplish.

CSU Meets Africa: An Eclectic Arts Celebration

B Sharpe Needs You!

B Sharp: An Arts Engagement Program
This project brings patients with dementia and their caregivers
to Fort Collins Symphony performances.

WHY IT MATTERS
In Colorado, one out of every 10 seniors has Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive neurological condition that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. It is the most common form of dementia, and the average lifespan for a person with the illness is eight years once symptoms become noticeable to others. Alzheimer’s disease has no cure and is the sixth leading cause of death in the state.

WHAT WE’RE DOING

The B Sharp Program provides 30 people with dementia and a primary caregiver the opportunity to attend concerts with the Fort Collins Symphony. They are able to enjoy the music, engage with other community members, and participate in a study aimed at measuring the impact of the concerts on their quality of life. Additionally, this study is unique, as most music therapy programs operate in an isolated social setting. In this program, participants are given season tickets, attend receptions with other caregivers/participants, and can participate with other community members in a social setting.

This project links two of Colorado State University’s departments together: the Department of Sociology and the Department of Psychology. We have researchers from both disciplines working together to create a project that benefits the caregivers socially and the patients cognitively. Additionally, this project expands upon the Department of Sociology’s program strength, which is social change. Much of our department is focused on environmental resources, food and agriculture, criminology, and social inequality. B Sharp emphasizes the importance of social sustainability; extending the areas of specialization within the department.

PROJECT GOALS

The goal of the project is to assess how attendance at musical performances influences the mood, memory, and attention for people with dementia. In addition, we are examining the social impacts on caregivers as they participate in community events with their loved ones. Results will be used by the community to inform other dementia-focused programs in Northern Colorado.

Because we have a dozen researchers on this project, we also hope to expose our undergraduate assistants to real-world problems that allow them to apply their major. Each researcher has undergone hours of training and plays an important role in data collection. Many of our undergraduate researchers are seniors who need such experience to enter the job market and implement social programs and evaluation research. These skills are both valuable and critical for success.

WHAT WE NEED

We need your help!

This project requires dozens of hours of researchers’ time. We have 12 student researchers present at each concert and a full-time research assistant managing and coordinating a variety of cognitive assessments, interviews, focus groups, and surveys. The research has been funded in part by Home State Bank, Kaiser Permanente, and Banner Health, which have collectively donated $27,000. However, this will only cover half the research costs.

We can do the best evaluation of this program by collecting data before, after, and in between each concert. Each $5,000 we raise will pay for an additional set of assessments. The money raised will ensure that we bring the project to fruition and can publish our results.

Funding received will help us:

•  Evaluate and improve the local program.
•  Collect preliminary data that will be used to write research proposals.
•  Identify the key components of the program so it can be replicated in other communities.

CELEBRATING TWELVE YEARS OF MASKS: EXCEPTIONAL CREATIVITY IN OUR COMMUNITY

On April 1, the 2016 Kaiser Permanente Masks Project kicks off as the Masks Exhibition opens at the Fort Collins Museum of Art during the Downtown First Friday Gallery Walk,
5:00-9:00 p.m. First Friday's are open-admission events made possible by funding from the Eye Center of Northern Colorado.

The project celebrates 12 years of Masks, the museum's signature fund-raising campaign. With the focus on community and creativity, Masks is Fort Collins largest visual art event with an exhibition of 200 masks designed by both professional artists, student artists and more casual artists whose daily endeavors are directed elsewhere.

Initially, masks leave the museum with the artists who responded to the call for entries as simple ceramic forms and return transformed into ingenious works of art to be exhibited and sold in the museum's silent auction. The in-gallery auction is but one part of the fundraising components of the project, which provides a major portion of the museum's annual budget.

Midway through the 30-day span of the Masks Project, a gala celebration pays tribute to an individual or individuals selected as the Masks Honorary Chair. This year's gala celebration, Carnevale di Venezia, is being held April 22 at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center. Tickets are available at FTCMA.org.

The 2016 Masks honorary chair is Michael Powers. Powers, who served on the museum's board of directors and was instrumental in the original purchase of the museum's building in 1989, it's reclamation from floodwaters and its successful sale to Brinkman Partners in 2012, worked for the City of Fort Collins for 25 years. During majority of his years with the City, Powers was the director of cultural, library and recreational services.

The 2016 Masks Project concludes May 6, also during the Downtown Fort Collins First Friday Gallery Walk. The silent auction bidding closes at 9:00 p.m. when top bidders are awarded their masks-of-choice.
