A year into the Great Depression, times are hard for Americans. Author Gertrude Chandler Warner’s beloved story unfolds in rural Illinois. Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny’s parents were recently killed in a tragic accident. Being separated by the foster system or living with an estranged grandfather are not options, so the newly orphaned siblings find themselves on the run to escape the looming separation that adoption will bring. Together with their dog, Watch, they seek refuge from a violent storm in an abandoned railroad boxcar. Surprisingly, a hardscrabble life for this little family brings new friends, the kindness of strangers, and an unexpected future. Debut Theatre Company brings to life a thrilling adventure of family love, camaraderie, and hope in The Boxcar Children.
