Fort Collins welcomes Chinese Kite Artists for Kites in the Park Festival

The City of Fort Collins Recreation Department will host the 8th annual Kites in the Park Festival on Sunday, May 17 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Spring Canyon Park Community Park, 2626 W. Horsetooth Rd., Fort Collins. This free community event welcomes kite attractions from around the world for kite flying, demonstrations, and competitions. There will also be concessions, a free Kite Making Station and giveaways throughout the day. Biking or walking to the festival is encouraged as parking is limited.

This year, the City of Fort Collins is partnering with HobbyTown USA and the Confucius Institute at Colorado State University to welcome internationally renowned kite fliers, Yong Yang and Zhanjun Ding, from the Pengcheng Kite Folk Art Center of Weifang, Shandong Province, China. The Center was founded in 1992 and has rich experience in kite design, making and flying. Yang and Ding will fill the skies with a giant dragon kite measuring 50 meters high and large animal kites.

Spectators will be invited to become kite fighters. Kite specialists will offer lessons and interested attendees can battle Rokkaku kites against each other.

Children visiting the Kite Making Station will receive a free kite that they can decorate, attach tails to and fly. In addition, more than 100 kites will be given away throughout the festival to those who win contests or drawings. DJ Lil’ Joe with 99.9 The Point will emcee. Vendors will also be in attendance with summer program information and food and merchandise for sale.

Kites in the Park is made possible by the City of Fort Collins Recreation Department, City of Fort Collins Fort Fund, HobbyTown USA, Confucius Institute at Colorado State University, Townsquare Media, 99.9 The Point, Hewlett-Packard, Clay’s ACE Hardware, Into the Wind and Old Firehouse Books.

  1. Although it is exciting to have Kite Artists from China, I wonder, did they also explore if any Fort Collins residents might have also been able to participate?
