Ayn Hanna: Textile, Print, and Adventures in Mapping

Trained as a printmaker, Colorado artist Ayn Hanna creates richly drawn active surfaces, exploring drawing and mark-making.  In her textile work, Hanna uses her own hand-dyed fabrics combined with multiple surface design techniques including painting, discharging, and deconstructed screen printing to create abstract mixed media textile paintings and art cloth.  Her textile paintings include layers of fabric combined with thread “drawing” to develop texture and line.
Included in the exhibit are works from Hanna’s LineScape Series which are inspired by maps of real and imagined places.  Drawing and the drawn/stitched line quality is an important element of this series.
Also included are a selection of Dye Drawings – pieces that combine deconstructed screen printing, direct dye drawing and stitching on fabric.  This deconstructed screen printing process is a remarkable synthesis of printing, painting, and drawing, allowing for a wholly unique approach to mark-making.
Ayn Hanna earned her MFA in printmaking and sculpture from Colorado State University in 1990 and has been working with textiles since 2005.
I am inspired by our many systems for mapping and organizing ideas, stories, data and place.  I enjoy the overlaps that exist between art and science – shapes, models, diagrams, formulas, patterns, etc. I am fascinated by connectors and connections, both physical and spiritual.  My work is a mapping of my inner and outer world, combining imagery and personal symbols to convey my feelings of places and experiences.~ Ayn Hanna
