The artwork in “Mark Making” invites the viewer to
step in and look closely at the work, recognizing subtleties in the
medium, such as the way the artist’s hand may move or shake, the texture
of the wall or paper, the space between the drawn or painted line and
negative space. All of these choices are intentional. The power of
these works derives from the immediacy of the moment, valuing creative
process over product, focusing on the present relationship between
artist and audience, and between art and life. As the creative process
for each artist is different, how they approach the meaning of the act
of mark making itself is also unique. In this exhibition, mark making
becomes a pathway to ideas of marking time, marking paths, marking
breath and marking form.
