A review of "The Hobbit" at UCA
Adam, age 5 y 10 mos - review - The Hobbit review
It was great! You should have seen it! There were only a few spooky parts. Bilbo Baggins was the first character we saw. He was eating real bread that looked like a whole bunch of muffins that were stuck together. The second character was Gandalf. He was wearing some stilts so he looked a lot like the real Gandalf in the movie, because the real Gandalf in the real movie was really tall. I haven't seen the movie, but my Dad told me how tall he was in the movie. Thorin Oakenshield, one of the dwarves, whacked the dragon named Smaug with a humongous fake sword. Galdalf gave the sword to Thorin Oakenshield from the elves. At the end of the play, they poured more than one hundred fake coins down. After the play, I got to take a picture with some of the characters. Taking pictures with the characters was really fun and I also got to keep one of the coins! It was much better than The Little Mermaid play, I think!
Annie age 3 y 1 mos - review - The Hobbit review
I thought it was spooky a lot, but I liked it. I liked the Queen [Elven Queen]. I liked that silly guy who pretended it was breakfast, but it was already morning outside. Bilbo Baggins! He ate breakfast, but it was fake morning on the TV [the video monitor used as a backdrop]. I want to come to a show with goblins at the end. I liked it.

Darin Atteberry Supports the Arts! (or so he says....)
Ahhh, politics. Here is a video of Fort Collins City Manager, Darin Atteberry addressing the Colorado Creative Industries Summit last week in Fort Collins.
Here are some selected quotes...
"Your work is very, very relevant."
"The creatives in Fort Collins are a huge part of what makes this place."
"Go talk to your mayors and you officials and ask what you can do."
Let's remember this when Arts Funding comes up for debate, again.
Check it out, and tell me what you think.

Williams’ Symphony No. 1, the monumental “Sea Symphony.”

Vaughan
Williams’ “Sea Symphony,” his first and longest piece for orchestra and
choir, was written between 1903 and 1909 at the young age of 30.
Considered ground-breaking for its extensive use of the choir throughout
the piece, the symphony created the framework for choral and symphonic
music in Britain during the first part of the 20th century. The text of
the piece comes from Walt Whitman's “Leaves of Grass,” a favorite of the
composer’s.
“There is a constant thick texture in orchestration, use of short motives, and a strong emphasis on text,” said Seesholtz. “Listeners should try to enjoy this music from a macro-scale perspective – Williams takes you on a long journey that doesn’t let you fully relax until the very end.”
The concert, takes place both nights at 7:30 p.m. in the Edna Rizley Griffin Concert Hall at the University Center for the Arts, located at 1400 Remington St. Tickets available at www.CSUArtsTickets.com.

When Art Goes Wrong: A Graduate Discourse on the Collision Between Culture and the Law
Friday, April 24 from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Runyan Rehearsal Hall
Colorado State University Center for the Arts
Graduate students will present their research in three panels:
Who Owns Hopi Culture?
Many indigenous peoples allege that sacred cultural artifacts have been stolen, improperly used and displayed, or other- wise compromised. This panel looks at the specific case of Hopi cultural artifacts recently placed for auction at Sotheby’s in France. Panelists take a closer look at the legal issues relating to cultural artifacts, cultural ownership and cultural property, as well as the cultural rights of indigenous peoples.
The Fall and Rise of Marion True and the Getty Museum
Pillaging of archeological sites, the taking of antique treasures, and the growth of a black market for antiquities in past centuries has led many nations to seek international legal remedy for return of cultural property. This panel looks at the case of the Getty Museum and curator Marion True, accused by the Italian government of stealing priceless Italian antiq- uities. This panel offers insight into: the Italian legal system, the internal policies of wealthy American museums and the foundations that guide them, the social and political aspects of antiquities collection, and the creation of a thriving antiquities black market.
Is Freedom of Expression Dead? The Aftermath of Charlie Hebdo
On January 7 of this year gunmen in Paris massacred cartoonists in the offices of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. The incident sparked heated discussions about freedom of expression, hate speech, cultural rights, and other issues. This panel looks at the evolving ideals of freedom of speech and expression against the backdrop of social, cultural, and legal issues.
Each panel is followed by a Q&A with the audience. This event includes a reception, networking opportunities, and a showcase of graduate student works.

Swashbuckling Doctors Celebrate with Runners after the Horsetooth Half
My husband ran the Horsetooth Half Yesterday and as a supportive and loving wife, I went to cheer him into the finish line. Well, also for the free beer. As we were enjoying said beer, we were blown away by the "Swashbuckling Doctors". This local Ska Band was wonderful! The best part was how much fun they seemed to be having during the performance. I also want to give a shout out to the fiber artist who created their quilted flags and doctor coats. Nice work guys! Make sure you check them out at FoCoMX! They will be performaing at the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery 9-10:00 on Friday night.

In Conversation: Visual Art and Poetry
Exhibit opens Friday, April 10th, 6 to 9 p.m.
At Artworks, Loveland
Reception, poetry readings and performance Friday, April 17th, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Over the centuries, poets have responded to visual art in poetry, and (less often) the reverse. One well-known poetic response is Rainier Maria Rilke’s “Archaic Torso of Apollo,” which ends with the insight that a powerful work of art looks back at the viewer, who must change his or her life. You are invited to the exhibit “In Conversation: Visual Art and Poetry,” which is part of Loveland’s celebration of National Poetry Month, in April. The idea for this exhibit and event is to capture a dialog between visual art and poetry. It began with each visual artist’s image being sent to a poet. The poet wrote a poem in response. Then each poet’s poem went to a different visual artist, who responded with a new visual piece. The result is an exhibit of visual art and poetry, displayed in conversational groupings. We hope you enjoy discovering the connections made artist to artist.
Participating visual artists:
Bob Campagna, Denny Haskew, Becky Hawley, Angela Canada-Hopkins, Tedi Jensen, Carrie Johansing, Selina Karim, Jennie Kiessling, gmark, Kayo Peeler, Dena Peterson, Abbie R Powers, Michael Ryan, Ronda Stone, Andrew Swedlow, Dion Weichers
Participating poets:
Roger Clark, Doug Erion, Norma Hammond, Denny Haskew, Lynn Kincanon, Robert King, E.A. Lechleitner, Nancy Jakobsson, Jack Martin, Faith McDonald, Evan Oakley, Caroline Orman, Veronica Patterson, Emily Rogers-Ramos, Kathleen Williams, Lisa Zimmerman

Impact Dance Presents "Ways of Knowing"
"Ways Of Knowing" April 16-27at the Community Creative Center! http://impactdancecompany.com/events/ways-of-knowing/
Corcovado at Jay's Bistro this Thursday
Ahhh, YES!!! CORCOVADO!!! "Corcovado" (known in English as "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars") is a Bossa Nova written by Antonio Carlos Jobim in 1960 (the English lyric was later written by Gene Lees). In Portuguese the title refers to the Corcovado mountain in Rio de Janeiro. "Corcovado" is a prime example of the positive music that the famous Brazilian singer Caetano Veloso speaks of, the music that takes you to the sea, to the beach, to fall in love, to be happy!
Recorded many times by countless well-known artists over the decades, it was recognized early on that "Corcovado" would stand the test of time in both Portuguese and English, and the gentle beauty of this standard would never lose its dreamy, enchanting, uplifting appeal!
If you like irresistible music, you will enjoy ALL the music at Jay's Bistro this Thursday evening, April 9th, beginning with the finest solo Jazz piano of Mark Sloniker at 6:30 pm, joined shortly by the magnificent bass of David B echer! AROUND 8:00 PM OR A LITTLE AFTER, there will be a Bossa Nova cameo, including "Corcovado," featuring the exceptional Brazilian guitar of Monty Hogan and flute and vocals by Judi Lucero. Other guests will sit in as well, and delightful music can be expected all evening until around 10:00 pm!!!

Call for Entry NoBo Art District invites submissions for Sidewalk Murals
Introduction
NoBo Art District, an artist-member, business and friend-supported art organization in north Boulder, Colorado, seeks to commission Colorado artists or teams of artists to create and install sidewalk paintings on the east and west sides of North Broadway, from the intersections of Rosewood Avenue to Yellow Pine Avenue, centering on the "Village Center" at Yarmouth Avenue and Broadway. Our project, PLACE (PLacemaking by Art and Community Engagement) is one step toward a larger vision that re-imagines north Boulder through streetscapes and public art, making NoBo one of Boulder's premier art destinations. The project goals include: 1) enhancing the visual corridor, a primary thoroughfare into the City of Boulder, with high quality public art, 2) building community among the neighbors and local businesses, 3) creating pedestrian friendly experiences, 4) supporting the local economy and 5) defining north Boulder as an Art District.
Eligibility
This call is open to all Colorado residents 18 years-of-age and over. Extra consideration will be given to Boulder County artists. However, the jury will focus on the excellence of design, the highest consideration in the selection process.
Artists are welcome to collaborate on entries.
(NoBo Art District Board members and those who have helped write or are named in the grant proposal are ineligible to participate.)
Selection
The selection process will be "blind." The jury is comprised of local artists who have shown their work nationally and internationally, an art instructor, art curators and landscape architect. All submitted images must be devoid of any reference to the artist. If your name or reference to your company appears on your images, your submission will not be considered. Artists' names must appear on the file submitted as instructed below.
We are particularly interested in designs emphasizing north Boulder as a place, visually connecting sidewalks across roads and intersections. Note: we are not painting the streets. For example, the head of a fish at one end of the sidewalk and the tail of a fish on the sidewalk across the street thematically would link the two together. Each submission will be judged for its artistic excellence and relevance to the north Boulder neighborhood, uniqueness of the design, and ease of installation.
Please read the following position statement and words defining north Boulder crafted by our community at a recent public meeting:
Position Statement
Boulder's identity as an art destination will be enhanced through the artistic focus on placemaking of this unique neighborhood. NoBo Art District thrives in the middle of a diverse community. New construction on the east side of Broadway contrasts long-established businesses on the west side. Boulder's homeless shelter and affordable housing diverge from the neighborhood's million dollar homes. High-end restaurants market their delicacies along side food trucks. Bicyclists and mountain lions roam the same territory, a place where the plains meet the mountains!
Words Defining North Boulder from Community Members
Alive * First Friday Art * active * bikers * artists' haven * gritty * excitement driving through NoBo * beautiful, radiant, dramatic light * today's light caresses ancient landslides natural beauty * innovative * creative spirit * casual atmosphere * cauldron of opportunities * community * unlit nightscape * out-of-city dwellers * contemporary * crossroads * contrasts in quality, new and old * urban * off beat * potential, developing open opportunities * edge of the rural landscape * scrappy * vintage * good restaurants * inclusive * individualistic * inviting * less crowded * unique to our city * multi-dimensional * old, but so NEW! * new restaurants, shops * old strip mall * quirky * really needs some public ART!
Design Guidelines
Mural design(s) should cover approximately 600 square feet. Up to fifty percent of the sidewalk can be covered.
Sidewalk widths differ on the east and west sides of North Broadway (from 5' to 15'). Therefore, if your design is selected, it may need to be modified to fit the sidewalk location to which it will be assigned. The images below identify the areas where the sidewalks may be painted.
Include a scale drawing, one inch per foot. An example of other sidewalk art from around the country is posted on our Pinterest page: Placemaking
(These examples are for inspiration only and include other public art ideas.)
Murals selected by the jury must be reviewed by the City of Boulder's Transportation Department and NoBo Art District PLACE Project Team to insure pedestrian safety and cohesiveness of overall design.
NoBo Art District will provide painting supplies: brushes, sprayers and low-toxicity, water-based, lead-free paint made for street painting. Non-skid grit will be added to the paint. Artists may only use the paint supplied by NoBo Art District.
Accepted Work
Once selections have been awarded, artists will be working with the NoBo Art District's PLACE Project Team to further refine designs to best fit the location of each painting and to conform to public safety concerns as defined by the Boulder Department of Transportation.
All work submitted must be the sole creation of the artist or artist team. Except for publicity purposes and merchandising for the NoBo Art District, the design remains the property of the artist. Artists or artist teams will be paid a stipend of $1,250. per implemented design at the completion of the installation.
